Description

Salted pork shanks as leitmotiv in a dark comedy about an absurd love triangle: this is what post-Franco cine is all about (food and sex). Spanish tortillas (i.e., potato omelets) are also big in this one. Director José Juan Bigas Luna's Jamón Jamón is intelligent, wry, and--despite the formulaic narrative that melodrama must essentially contain--unpredictable. At times his film exudes a certain Almodóvar flavor, but there is an edge, perhaps a heavy-handedness, to the dark humor that is either Luna's success or his downfall. The film garnered the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, after all. Try to follow: sexy Penelope Cruz (Belle Epoque) is growing up with her mother outside town on the highway, on the wrong side of the highway. Together they run a truck stop where cars and life literally race past. Cruz is in love with Jordí Molla, by whom she is pregnant. Molla's bourgeois mother, played by Anna Galiena (Being Human), thinks he can and should do better. (Of course, neither Cruz nor his mother knows of the erotic, hmm, avian interludes Molla enjoys on the side.) To save her son from the lower classes, Galiena hires Javier Bardem, a muscular, pretty man (whose regular consumption of the pork he distributes for a living has enhanced his sexual appeal) to pursue Cruz. The dark comedy finds a proper ending to the triangle in a grotesque but comedic landscape of death. This is not a cookie-cutter movie but rather one that will resonate with both your light and dark sides. After each surprise, you'll chuckle, feel guilty, and chuckle again. --Erik Macki

Back when he wasn't relegated to the lesser cable channels, soft-porn meister Zalman King uncorked this howler of a drama on moviegoers, who were initially titillated by the ratings battle, but then shrugged and went off in search of the next cheap sensation. Model and subsequent Mickey Rourke squeeze Carré Otis plays a brilliant young attorney--well, we're told she's brilliant, although watching her in action, straining to wrap those puffy lips around her legalese dialogue, definitely conjures up other adjectives. She's dispatched to Rio de Janeiro under the guise of real-estate law and ends up seduced both by the exotic culture and by a brooding, highly misunderstood and frighteningly orange-skinned multimillionaire (Rourke). Kinky (for the time) sex games and deliriously mannered dialogue make this a rather pretentious exercise, unleavened by any truly erotic sensuality. Fun for taunting purposes, though. --David Kronke

The animated series Lil' Bush isn't the first television comedy to center its gags on the words and deeds on George W. Bush's presidency (that distinction belongs to Trey Parker and Matt Stone's short-lived That's My Bush!), but its premise, which envisions Bush and his cabinet as ill-mannered grade schoolers, enlivens its broad comic approach. Creator Donick Cary (who also voices the unintelligible and bloodthirsty Lil' Cheney) spins his kid-sized Bush staff according to popular opinion about their personalities--Lil' Bush is dense but craft, Lil' Condi pines for Bush, Lil' Rummy (voiced by Iggy Pop, of all people) is the scapegoat for their misadventures, and so on-- and the 30-minute episodes manage to skewer not only the Bush administration but American politics as a whole (the Clintons, Barack Obama, and Al Gore are not immune to Cary's hazing), toss about pop culture references and gross-out jokes and even squeeze in a musical number (by the Lil' Bush band). It's all very fast-paced and over the top and definitely not for the easily offended, but it's also not particularly fresh in its attack on a President who's been the target of pundits and comics since his first days in office. Those who don't mind the soft satire will find Lil' Bush entertaining; all others will do better with South Park or even The Daily Show. The DVD includes cast and crew commentaries on all six episodes, as well as alternate commentaries by real-life politicos and commentators Tucker Carlson, Ralph Nader, and Jerry Springer (none of whom seem to be in on the joke). Interviews with the creators, a table read with the cast, and a bonus episode, the 12-minute "Walter Read," round out the extras. --Paul Gaita
